Turning city streets into an AR skatepark
Branding, UI/UX design, video-editing for marketing content. Project developed by Solarflare Studios ‘Launch’ team using Niantic’s Live Depth Mesh technology.
The game allows users to place a virtual skateboard in any environment, enabling thrilling maneuvers like bumping downstairs, sliding down slopes, and executing jumps onto tables. To enhance gameplay, we incorporated virtual objects such as grindable rails and jumpable ramps, creating a dynamic augmented reality skatepark.
The design process involved meticulous prototyping in Figma and asset design in Illustrator/Figma to ensure a seamless and engaging user experience. The collaborative efforts within the ‘Launch’ team resulted in a visually compelling final product. Post-development, After Effects was utilized to craft captivating video content for social media, effectively showcasing the dynamic features of Solar SK8.
Research & Conceptualization
My journey began with deep dives into audience analysis and assessing the feasibility of AR technology.
Challenge: The main hurdle was integrating Niantic’s Live Depth Mesh technology to accurately render complex urban terrains, balancing innovative gameplay with AR’s current technical constraints.
Prototyping & Asset Design
Focus on crafting realistic AR skatepark elements through extensive prototyping in Figma.
Challenge: Achieving a balance between high-quality, immersive visuals and optimal performance across a variety of devices was crucial, demanding meticulous asset optimization.
User Testing & Iteration
This phase involved refining gameplay based on user feedback, focusing on intuitive interaction with AR elements.
Challenge: Adapting the game to work seamlessly in diverse real-world settings revealed UX issues, which we addressed through iterative testing and design adjustments.
Finalization & Marketing
Harmonizing the efforts of design, development, and marketing teams was key to finalizing the game.
Challenge: Keeping all team members aligned on the project’s goals was essential, ensuring a unified approach to overcoming technical and UX challenges.
